The FCC moved forward with sweeping changes in the 900 MHz band, making 6 megahertz of low-band spectrum available for the development of critical wireless broadband technologies and services through a process of realigning the band by moving incumbent narrowband users to different 900 MHz spectrum.

The Federal Communications Commission today took action to make six megahertz of low-band spectrum available for the development of critical wireless broadband technologies and services. The 900 MHz band is currently designated for narrowband land mobile radio communications and primarily used by land transportation, utility, manufacturing, and petrochemical companies.

The US Federal Communications Commission has adopted a new plan to open up the 900 MHz band to new applications in critical communications. While the band is currently reserved for narrowband land mobile radio, the FCC wants to make 6 MHz of the low-band spectrum available for new wireless broadband services.

The Federal Communications Commission voted Wednesday to allow broadband services on airwaves previously reserved for radio communications by railroads, manufacturing facilities, and petrochemical companies.
